Rome’s rooftop terraces are at their best at sunset, from spring to autumn. Some serve breakfast with a view, others open as cocktail bars in the evening, and a few are open to non-residents, so arrive early. Hotels near the Forum and Colosseum look over ancient Rome; those near the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese look over the domes of the historic centre.
