The Gambia holidays
Winter sun six hours from the UK — Atlantic beaches, river creeks full of birds and the friendly “Smiling Coast” of Africa.
Overview
Welcome to The Gambia
The Gambia is mainland Africa’s smallest country, a narrow strip of land following the Gambia River inland from the Atlantic, almost surrounded by Senegal. For UK travellers it is one of the easiest winter-sun escapes: no time difference in winter, a flight of about six hours, and dry, sunny weather from November to May. The coast has long sandy beaches and relaxed resorts at Kololi, Kotu, Cape Point and Kerr Serign, with quieter eco-lodges further south.
Inland, the river and its mangrove creeks are among the best birdwatching areas in Africa, with more than 500 species recorded. Boat trips explore the creeks and the river; Abuko Nature Reserve and the Kachikally crocodile pool are close to the coast; and the River Gambia National Park protects chimpanzees on its islands. Kunta Kinteh Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tells the story of the transatlantic slave trade, and Banjul, the small capital, has the Albert Market and Arch 22.

From the team
Why we love The Gambia
Mix the beach with the river: a few days on the coast, then a night or two upriver for birds and village life. It is a very different Africa just six hours from home.

Knowing before you go
When to go
The dry season, November to May, is the best time: sunny, 30–33°C on the coast with cooler evenings. It is also the prime birdwatching season. July to September is the rainy season, hot and humid, with lush green landscapes.
Flights & how to get there
Direct flights from London Gatwick and Manchester take about 6 hours, mainly in the winter season. The Gambia is on GMT, so there is no time difference with the UK in winter.
Visa & passport
Visa rules for UK visitors can change, so check the current requirement before you book. A yellow fever certificate may be required. For up-to-date entry requirements and safety advice, check the UK FCDO travel advice for The Gambia.
Currency & money
The Gambian dalasi (GMD). Cards work in larger hotels; carry cash for markets, tips and excursions.
Language & tipping
English (official), with Mandinka, Wolof and Fula widely spoken.
Health & safety
Malaria is present, so antimalarial medication is recommended, and yellow fever vaccination is advised. Consult your GP or a travel clinic at least six weeks before you travel and buy comprehensive travel insurance.
