Sicily is the Mediterranean’s largest island and one of its most fascinating: Greek temples, Baroque towns, Mount Etna, beautiful beaches and some of Italy’s best food. Taormina, perched above the sea with Etna as its backdrop, is the classic base, while Cefalù charms with its Norman cathedral and sandy beach.

When to go and getting there
Sicily enjoys a long season. July and August are hot, often in the 30s °C, and perfect for the beach. May, June, September and October are ideal for sightseeing, with warm sea and comfortable temperatures. Flights to Catania take around three hours from the UK, and Taormina is about an hour from the airport. Palermo airport serves the north coast, with Cefalù about an hour away.
Eating and drinking
Sicilian food is a highlight of any trip. Try arancini (fried rice balls), pasta alla Norma with aubergine and ricotta, fresh swordfish, and caponata, a sweet-and-sour aubergine stew. For breakfast, locals eat granita with a brioche bun. Cannoli and cassata are the classic desserts, and almond pastries and pistachio from Bronte are wonderful. Etna’s volcanic vineyards produce some of Italy’s most exciting wines.
