Medina, Hivernage or Palmeraie?
The medina and its edges: the walled old city, with the souks, Jemaa el-Fna square and the Bahia Palace on your doorstep. Hivernage and the new town: smart, modern hotels, restaurants and bars, a short taxi ride from the medina. The Palmeraie and the outskirts: resort-style hotels set among palm groves and gardens, with golf, big pools and peace and quiet; most run a shuttle into the city.
For a first visit, many guests like a resort-style hotel with a shuttle: you get calm and space after the intensity of the souks.

When to go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal, with warm, sunny days in the mid-20s °C. Summer is very hot, often above 35 °C, so a hotel with a great pool matters. Winter days are sunny and mild, around 18 to 20 °C, but evenings are cool, so pack layers. Flights take around three and three-quarter hours from the UK, and most hotels are 20 to 30 minutes from the airport.
Things to do and what to eat
Lose yourself in the souks, watch the storytellers and food stalls of Jemaa el-Fna come to life at dusk, visit the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the cobalt-blue Jardin Majorelle, and take a day trip to the Atlas Mountains or the Agafay desert. Try a slow-cooked tagine, couscous on a Friday, pastilla (a sweet and savoury pastry), harira soup and fresh mint tea. A traditional hammam is the perfect way to unwind.
