Skiathos: the liveliest, with the airport, dozens of sandy beaches such as Koukounaries and Lalaria, and a buzzing harbour town. Skopelos: greener and quieter, with pine-fringed coves, a beautiful whitewashed town and the Mamma Mia! chapel of Agios Ioannis. Alonissos: the most peaceful, with the National Marine Park and its monk seals, dolphins and crystal-clear water. All three are linked by ferry, so island-hopping is easy.

When to go and getting there
May to October is the season, with June and September ideal for warm sea and quieter beaches. Flights to Skiathos take around three and a half hours from the UK. Skiathos hotels are within about 20 minutes of the airport, and ferries to Skopelos and Alonissos take roughly one to two hours.
Things to do and what to eat
Take a boat trip around Skiathos to Lalaria beach and the sea caves, climb the steps to the Agios Ioannis chapel on Skopelos, walk among plum orchards and pine forests, and look for dolphins in the Alonissos marine park. Skopelos is famous for its cheese pie, and the islands for fresh fish, plums and honey.
