The Costa de la Luz, the “coast of light”, is Spain’s Atlantic shoreline between Portugal and Gibraltar: mile after mile of wide golden beaches, dunes and pine forests, white towns and some of the country’s best seafood. It is far less developed than the Mediterranean costas, and many Spanish families holiday here.
These ten hotels are the ones our guests rate most highly, from five-star beachfront luxury to great family resorts.

Cádiz coast or Huelva coast?
The Cádiz coast (Novo Sancti Petri, Conil, Costa Ballena): golden beaches, white villages like Vejer de la Frontera, sherry country and easy trips to Cádiz, Jerez and Seville. Fly to Jerez. The Huelva coast (Isla Canela, Isla Cristina, Islantilla, El Rompido): quieter, with pine forests, marshes and long beaches, close to the Portuguese border. It is usually reached via Faro, about an hour away.
How we chose these hotels
We sell 29 hotels in the Costa de la Luz. To build this list we started with every hotel on the coast, then read what our guests say: every hotel here is well rated on TripAdvisor. We spread our picks across different areas where we can, and we only include hotels you can book with us today as an ATOL-protected package with flights and transfers. Prices change daily, so use the search box at the end of this page for live availability, or ask a Travel Designer for a tailored shortlist.
When to go and getting there
June to September is beach season, with hot, sunny days that are often a little fresher than the Mediterranean thanks to the Atlantic breeze. May and October are lovely for walking, golf and sightseeing. Flights to Jerez take around two and three-quarter hours from the UK, and flights to Faro around two and three-quarter hours. The coast can be windy, which is why Tarifa, at its southern tip, is a world-famous kitesurfing spot.
Things to do and what to eat
Explore the old city of Cádiz, visit a sherry bodega in Jerez, watch the Andalusian horses perform at the Royal School in Jerez, wander the white hill town of Vejer de la Frontera, and take a day trip to Seville. The Doñana National Park, one of Europe’s great wetlands, is close to the Huelva coast. Eat the famous red tuna from Barbate and Conil, prawns from Huelva, tortillitas de camarones (shrimp fritters) and fried fish, with a chilled glass of fino or manzanilla.
