Lloret de Mar: lively, with a big beach and lots of bars and restaurants. Tossa de Mar: the prettiest town on the coast, with medieval walls above the beach. L’Estartit: quieter, and the gateway to the Medes Islands marine reserve. Santa Susanna, Malgrat and Pineda de Mar (Costa Barcelona): long sandy beaches, great-value hotels and easy trains to Barcelona.

When to go and getting there
June to September is beach season, with July and August hot and busy; May and late September are calmer and perfect for walking the coastal paths. Flights to Barcelona or Girona take around two hours from the UK. Most resorts are 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter from either airport, and the coastal train from the Costa Barcelona resorts reaches Barcelona in about an hour.
Things to do and what to eat
Walk the Camí de Ronda coastal path between hidden coves, explore Tossa de Mar’s Vila Vella, snorkel or dive around the Medes Islands, visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, and take a day trip to Barcelona for Gaudí’s Sagrada Família and Park Güell. Catalan favourites include pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato), suquet de peix (fish stew), crema catalana, and the region’s sparkling cava.
