When to go and getting there
May to October is beach season. July and August are very hot, so May, June, September and October are ideal for combining beaches with sightseeing. Flights to Athens take around three and three-quarter hours from the UK. Glyfada is about 30 to 40 minutes from the airport, and central Athens is around 30 to 45 minutes from Glyfada by tram, taxi or bus.
Things to do and what to eat
Visit the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, wander the Plaka and Monastiraki, watch the sunset from the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, swim in the warm mineral water of Lake Vouliagmeni, and spend a day at a Riviera beach club. Take a ferry from Piraeus to Aegina for the day. Try souvlaki and gyros, fresh fish at a seaside taverna, spanakopita, loukoumades (honey doughnuts) and a glass of local Assyrtiko.
