Morocco Tours Compared: 3-Day Sahara Dash to 15-Day Grand Loop

In this story

Morocco squeezes a lot into one country: the blue lanes of Chefchaouen, the medina and tanneries of Fes, the High Atlas, a night in a camp among the Sahara dunes and the souks of Marrakech. Most tours here follow some version of that loop, so the real choice is how long you give it, how simple the beds are, and whether you would rather see it from a minibus, on foot or by bike.

This guide is for anyone comparing escorted tours of Morocco. We line up every tour on our Morocco tours page, from a three-day dash to the dunes to three weeks with Spain and Portugal, with who each suits and its honest drawback.

Morocco with Spain and Portugal

Four tours cross the Strait of Gibraltar. Madrid to Marrakech (15 days) runs through Salamanca, Coimbra, Lisbon, the Algarve and Seville to Chefchaouen, Fes and Marrakech by train, public transport and ferry. Spain, Portugal & Morocco (25 days) adds the mountains, desert and Essaouira. Lisbon to Madrid (16 days) is a coach tour with a tour director and local guides in four Moroccan cities, and Luxury Spain & Morocco (19 days) uses quality hotels and riads, with a night at a desert camp in rocky Agafay rather than the Sahara dunes.

How to choose

By time available. Three to six days: the Sahara short break or Marrakesh with flights. Eight to ten days: Classic Morocco, Highlights or one of the active trips. Two weeks: Best of Morocco or Madrid to Marrakech. Three weeks or more: the luxury or 25-day Iberian combinations.

By budget. The Sahara short break, Morocco Highlights and the active trips are the cheapest; Best of Morocco is good value for its length. The luxury and coach combinations with Spain cost the most. Live prices are in the table above.

By fitness. Most tours are rated medium, mainly for long drives and walking in medinas. The Anti-Atlas trek and Hike & Bike are the most active; Marrakesh with flights and the family trip are rated low.

By travel style. Small groups of up to 12 or 16 on most tours, a 40-seat coach on Lisbon to Madrid. Expect at least one simple desert camp on any tour that reaches the Sahara.

When to go

The classic loops depart all year. The active and family trips run mainly in spring, autumn and winter, and Marrakesh with flights runs from autumn to spring. The months for each tour are in its fact panel above.
