Tour overview

This 10-day small-group adventure loops from Marrakech through Morocco's great cities, mountains and desert, by train and private vehicle. A local leader travels with the group, which numbers no more than sixteen. You stay nine nights, eight in hotels and one in a desert camp in the Sahara, with breakfast daily, a home-cooked lunch with an Amazigh family and dinner at the desert camp.

After a welcome meeting in Marrakech you take the train to Casablanca for an orientation walk, then travel to Chefchaouen, the blue city of the Rif Mountains, to watch the sunset from a viewpoint above its whitewashed lanes. A local guide shows you the Roman ruins of Volubilis on the way to Fes, where a guided walk through Fes el Bali, one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world, takes in the Medersa El Attarine, a caravanserai and the famous tanneries.

A long drive past kasbahs and palm groves brings you to the edge of the Sahara for a night in a desert camp, with sunrise from the dunes the next morning. You walk through the towering walls of the Todra Gorge and spend two nights in the Dades Valley, with a day of hiking through its backcountry and lunch with an Amazigh family. On the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs you visit Aït Benhaddou, a fortified village almost unchanged since the 11th century, before crossing the High Atlas back to Marrakech.

The physical rating is medium. This trip suits travellers who want to see the best of Morocco in a short trip and at excellent value.
