Morocco Hike & Bike: Atlas Mountains to the Sahara – 9 Days
Cycling and hiking from the High Atlas to the Sahara, with a gite stay and a desert camp, in a group of up to 16.
Tour overview
This 9-day active trip explores Morocco on foot and by bike, from the peaks and valleys of the High Atlas to the dunes of the Sahara and the red canyons of the Todra Gorge. Groups have up to 16 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout. You stay eight nights: five in hotels, two in a traditional gite with private bathrooms in the mountain village of Imlil, and one in a desert camp with shared tents and bathrooms. Breakfast is included daily, with two lunches and six dinners, many of them in local homes and gites.
From Marrakech you head into the Atlas Mountains for a day of cycling and hiking among Amazigh villages, walnut groves and terraced fields, arriving in Imlil at the foot of Mount Toubkal. The next morning you learn to bake traditional Moroccan bread with a local family before setting out on another day in the mountains.

A drive over the Tizi n'Tichka, the highest mountain pass in Morocco, brings you to Ait Benhaddou, the famous mudbrick ksar on the old caravan route and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You then ride your bike along the edge of the Draa Valley to Agdz, an oasis town surrounded by palm groves and kasbahs.
Continuing south as rocky desert plateaus give way to the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, you spend a night at a desert camp under the stars. After sunrise over the dunes, you travel to Tinghir and hike with your leader through the towering limestone walls of the Todra Gorge before returning across the mountains to Marrakech for a final night.
The physical rating is medium, with daily rides and hikes on varied terrain. This trip suits active travellers who want to see Morocco's landscapes up close, with the variety of cycling, hiking and a night in the Sahara. Bikes are provided, and the leader adapts each ride to the group's ability. The desert camp has no power for charging, so bring a spare battery for your phone and camera. Helmets are provided, and the support vehicle carries your main luggage.
