Tour overview

This 16-day escorted tour links Portugal, Spain and Morocco. It starts with two nights in Lisbon and a guided visit to Belém, then crosses into Andalucía for two nights in Seville. From there a ferry crosses the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco, where you spend six nights in Fes, Marrakesh, Casablanca and Tangier.

Back in Spain, a guided tour of the Rock of Gibraltar is followed by a free day on the Costa del Sol. On the way to Granada, stop in the village of Alfarnatejo for an olive oil tasting and lunch in a local family's home, then visit the Alhambra and the Generalife gardens. The tour ends with two nights in Madrid and a visit to the Prado Museum with an art historian.

Local guides lead the sightseeing in each city, including the medinas of Fes and Marrakesh and Seville Cathedral. In Seville you also visit the Cristina Heeren Foundation, a flamenco school, for a short lesson and a performance. Several days have a later start.

  1. Day 1 · Lisbon Arrive in Lisbon

    A transfer takes you from Lisbon airport to your hotel. At 6 pm, meet your tour director and the group for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

  2. Day 2 · Lisbon, Belém Lisbon and Belém

    A later start, then a local guide takes you through Belém, the district the great sailing expeditions set out from. Taste pastéis de Belém and visit the National Coach Museum, with one of the world's largest collections of horse-drawn carriages. The afternoon and evening are free. You could visit the Portuguese Riviera or hear fado.

  3. Day 3 · Algarve, Tavira, Seville Through the Algarve to Seville

    Drive into the Algarve and stop for lunch in a coastal town, then cross into Spain and continue through Andalucía to Seville, arriving in the late afternoon. The evening is free. An Andalusian evening of food and music is offered as an optional extra.

  4. Day 4 · Seville Seville and flamenco

    A later start. Choose between a walk through the Santa Cruz quarter with a local guide or a drive past the city's landmarks. Then visit Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the burial place of Christopher Columbus. In the evening, visit the Cristina Heeren Foundation, which teaches flamenco, to meet students, try a few steps and watch a performance.

  5. Day 5 · Strait of Gibraltar, Fes Across the Strait of Gibraltar to Fes

    Take the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar from Tarifa to Tangier, then travel on to Fes. Dinner is included.

    A travel day south from Fes. Along the way you pass traditional mud-walled villages and wide arid plains, with views of the Atlas Mountains as you approach Marrakesh, a long-standing centre of culture and trade.

    A later start, then a local guide shows you the medina. See the Koutoubia Mosque's minaret from outside, then visit the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century palace decorated with mosaics. The rest of the day is free. You could explore the souks around Jemaa el-Fnaa or visit a museum.

    A later start, then drive to Casablanca on the Atlantic coast. A Moroccan guide shows you the city, including the Hassan II Mosque, the largest in the country, and the Corniche seafront. Dinner is included.

  10. Day 10 · Rabat, Tangier Rabat and Tangier

    Travel north to Rabat to see the Royal Palace and the Hassan Tower with your guide, then continue to Tangier. After seeing the city on arrival, dinner is at the hotel. In the evening you could walk along Avenue d'Espagne beside the bay.

  11. Day 11 · Gibraltar, Costa del Sol, Torremolinos Gibraltar and the Costa del Sol

    Take the ferry back to Spain and drive to Gibraltar, a British territory since 1704. A local guide takes you up the Rock and into St Michael's Cave, where you can see the Barbary apes. Then continue through Andalucía to Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol.

    Visit Alfarnatejo, a white village of about 500 people in the mountains. At its rural mill, taste olive oils with local bread, then split into small groups for lunch in a local family's home. Continue to Granada for a guided visit to the Alhambra and the Generalife gardens.

How do I book this tour?

What financial protection do I get?

How much walking is there?

Mostly guided city walks, including Lisbon, the Santa Cruz quarter in Seville, the medinas of Fes and Marrakesh and Madrid's Old Quarter, plus palace and museum visits. Several days have a later start.

How do you cross to Morocco?

By ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar, from Tarifa to Tangier on Day 5 and back to Spain on Day 11. The rest of the journey is on an air-conditioned 40-seat coach.

What meals are included?

Breakfast daily from Day 2, a home-cooked lunch in Alfarnatejo (Day 13) and six dinners: Lisbon (Day 1), Fes (Days 5 and 6), Casablanca (Day 9), Tangier (Day 10) and a farewell dinner in Madrid (Day 15).

I'm travelling alone. Do I have to pay for a single room?

No. You can share a room with a traveller of the same sex at no extra cost, or pay for a room of your own. Single prices are shown for each departure.

Are airport transfers included?

Yes, from Lisbon airport on arrival and to Madrid airport at the end, at scheduled times. If your flights fall outside those times, you can book a transfer or make your own way.
