Tour overview

This 8-day small-group tour packs Morocco's classic highlights into just over a week, from the great mosque of Casablanca and the medina of Fes to the Sahara, the kasbahs of the south and the souks of Marrakech. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout and local guides in the cities. You stay seven nights in hotels and a Sahara camp, with the chance of a night in a traditional riad. Breakfast is included daily, with a lunch and three dinners, and an airport arrival transfer is provided in Casablanca.

Your trip begins in Casablanca with a guided visit to the Hassan II Mosque, rising above the Atlantic and one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world. On the way to Fes you take a leader-led walk in the holy town of Moulay Idriss and a guided tour of Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco.

Fes, the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco, is a feast for the senses, and a day in its ancient medina reveals tanneries, mosques, madrasas and craft workshops hidden in a maze of lanes. From there, you drive through ever-changing scenery, from cedar forests and barren mountainsides to rocky desert, arriving at Merzouga to spend a night at a camp among the dunes of the Sahara.

Rising early to watch the sunrise from the dunes, you travel to the Todra Gorge, with its towering red walls, then on to Ait Benhaddou, a hilltop ksar almost unchanged for centuries, for a leader-led walk, a visit to a teahouse and a painting lesson with a local artist. In Marrakech you are invited to lunch at a restaurant that trains disadvantaged women as chefs, before a local guide leads you through the medina and its hidden corners.

The physical rating is medium, with long drives and walking in the medinas. This tour suits first-time visitors who want to see Morocco's classic sights in a short trip with a small group. An arrival transfer is included in Casablanca, and the trip runs year-round. Pack light for the night in the desert camp.
