Tour overview

This 15-day tour links the great ancient sites of Jordan and Egypt, travelling by road, ferry and overnight train from the Roman ruins of Jerash to the temples and tombs of Luxor. Travellers aged 16 and over join a tour leader throughout. You stay fourteen nights in comfortable hotels, including a beach hotel with a pool in Dahab and a Cairo hotel with Nile views, plus a night at a traditional Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum, a night near St Catherine's Monastery and a night on an overnight train to Luxor. Fourteen breakfasts, four lunches and five dinners are included, among them a Bedouin zarb dinner cooked beneath the sand and a home-cooked lunch with a family in Luxor.

From Amman, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, you visit the Citadel and the remarkably preserved Roman city of Jerash. A long and varied day takes in the mosaics of Madaba, a float in the Dead Sea and the crusader castle of Kerak on the way to Petra, where a full day lets you explore the rose-red city carved into sandstone cliffs, with an optional visit to Petra by night.

A 4WD drive through the desert landscapes of Wadi Rum leads to a night at a Bedouin camp under the stars. Crossing the Red Sea by ferry from Aqaba to Taba, you reach the laid-back resort of Dahab for snorkelling at the Blue Hole, then head into the mountains to St Catherine's Monastery, with an optional pre-dawn climb of Mount Sinai for sunrise.

Driving to Cairo via the Suez Canal, you visit the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza and the new Grand Egyptian Museum. An overnight train takes you to Luxor, where you visit Karnak Temple and sail on the Nile by felucca, then cross to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu. A free day allows for an optional sunrise hot-air balloon flight.

The physical rating is medium, with early starts, walking on uneven ground and some long drives. This tour suits travellers who want to see the highlights of both countries in two weeks, with the logistics handled.
