Tour overview

This 9-day small-group trip is a fast-paced introduction to Jordan and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, from the ancient city of Petra and the deserts of Wadi Rum to the Red Sea coast and the mountains of Mount Sinai, finishing in Cairo. Groups have up to 16 travellers aged 15 and over, with local leaders in Jordan and Egypt. You stay eight nights: seven in modest twin-share hotels and one in a shared camel-hair tent at a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum. Seven breakfasts are included, along with a traditional Bedouin zarb dinner, slow-cooked in the sand, at the desert camp.

Your trip begins in Amman with a welcome meeting, then a minibus takes you to Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to be buried and to have looked out over the Promised Land. Arriving in Petra, you spend two nights near the lost city of the Nabataeans, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, with a full day to walk the narrow Siq to the Treasury, explore the royal tombs and climb to the Monastery.

From Petra you drive into Wadi Rum, a rugged, lunar-like landscape of red sand framed by huge sandstone mountains, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. A night at a Bedouin camp brings a zarb dinner and a sky full of stars. The next morning you travel to Aqaba, say goodbye to your Jordanian leader and cross the Red Sea into Egypt.

Dahab, a relaxed resort town on the Gulf of Aqaba, offers two nights to unwind, with the chance to snorkel at the Blue Hole, one of the best diving sites in the Red Sea. You then drive into the mountains to St Catherine, with an optional pre-dawn climb of Mount Sinai to watch the sunrise, before visiting St Catherine's Monastery, built over 1,500 years ago at the foot of the mountain. The final drive takes you through the desert to Cairo.

The physical rating is medium, with early starts and walking on uneven ground. This trip suits travellers short on time who want Petra, the desert and the Red Sea in little more than a week.
