Tour overview

This 27-day overland adventure crosses five countries from Nairobi to the Victoria Falls, travelling by purpose-built safari truck and camping beneath African skies. A local leader travels with you, with a driver and cook, and groups are no larger than twenty-two. You stay twenty-six nights mostly in two-person dome tents at campsites, which can be basic, with hotel and bungalow nights on Zanzibar. Most meals are included, with twenty-five breakfasts, seventeen lunches and twenty dinners, and everyone helps around camp.

From Nairobi you cross into Tanzania and head for the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Crater, where a 4×4 game drive explores a perfectly intact volcanic caldera home to some 30,000 animals. You camp inside the Serengeti for dawn and dusk drives across its endless plains, with an optional balloon flight, then return to Mto wa Mbu for a village walk and local dinner. In the Usambara Mountains, rarely visited by tourists, you hike to the Irente viewpoint and enjoy a locally prepared lunch.

After a night on the beach near Dar es Salaam, a ferry brings you to Zanzibar for the alleys of Stone Town and two nights on the island's northern beaches. Back on the mainland, a 4WD safari crosses Mikumi National Park, and you continue into Malawi for several days on the shores of Lake Malawi, with free time to swim, canoe or meet the welcoming people of the 'warm heart of Africa'.

In Zambia, South Luangwa has one of Africa's highest concentrations of wildlife, explored on morning and evening game drives, and you visit a workshop where women turn snare wire into jewellery. Crossing into Zimbabwe, you explore the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, a World Heritage Site, and track rhinos on foot with an expert guide in Matobo National Park, among granite outcrops and San rock paintings, before ending at the Victoria Falls.

The physical rating is medium, with long drives and participatory camping. This trip suits adventurous travellers who want to see East and Southern Africa overland on a budget.
