Tour overview

This 10-day small-group trip crosses from Uganda into Rwanda in search of two of Africa's rarest primates: the mountain gorilla and the golden monkey. Groups have no more than 12 travellers aged 16 and over, with a tour leader throughout and specialist ranger guides for every walk and trek. You travel overland by minibus and stay in comfortable lodges, finishing with a night in a premium hotel in Kigali. The gorilla permit and golden monkey permit are both included, and so are 9 breakfasts, 4 lunches and 7 dinners. The trip is land-only, starting in Kampala and ending in Kigali.

From Kampala, on the shores of Lake Victoria, the route heads west to Lake Mburo, Uganda's smallest savannah park and one of the few places in the country with zebra. With no lions or elephants, it is also one of the only parks in Uganda where you can walk among the wildlife. You spend two nights here, with a guided walking safari across the plains, an afternoon boat trip among hippos, crocodiles and water birds, and a night drive in search of leopard.

The landscape turns green and steep on the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, through villages, coffee farms and banana plantations. Bwindi protects around half of the world's mountain gorillas, and you have three nights at its edge. The trek itself can take anything from two to eight hours through steep, muddy forest, and the reward is an hour with a habituated gorilla family. Visitor numbers at each family are strictly limited, so the group may trek on different days, with village and forest walks on the other day.

Crossing the Cyanika border brings you into Rwanda and Volcanoes National Park, set beneath the Virunga volcanoes. Here you walk into the bamboo forest to find a troop of golden monkeys, lively, colourful and endangered. There is also a visit to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus, which continues the conservation work begun by Dian Fossey. The trip ends in Kigali with a city tour that includes the views from Mount Kigali and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a moving introduction to Rwanda's recent history.

The physical rating is high because of the gorilla trek, which needs good fitness and sturdy boots. Porters can be hired locally and are recommended. Gorilla permits are a significant part of the price, and a share of permit revenue supports the protection of the forest and the communities around it. This trip suits travellers who want a focused, well-paced primate safari with time in both countries.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book this tour?

Tap any "Enquire" button on the page and one of our travel specialists will be in touch within 24 hours (often same day). We'll confirm availability on your preferred date, run through anything you need to know, and only ask for the deposit once you've decided.

What financial protection do I get?

Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.

Is the gorilla permit included?

Yes. One mountain gorilla trek in Bwindi and one golden monkey trek in Volcanoes National Park are included in the price, with ranger guides.

How hard is the gorilla trek?

It can be demanding. Expect steep, muddy forest paths and possibly rain. Most treks take two to four hours to reach the gorillas, but some take up to eight. Porters can be hired locally for around USD 20 and are recommended.

How close do you get to the gorillas?

Each habituated family can be visited by up to eight people a day, and you spend one hour with them once they are found. Rangers set the distance, and the gorillas are generally calm.

Will the whole group trek on the same day?

Not always. Because permits for each family are limited, the group may be split across Days 5 and 6, with forest and village walks on the other day.

Are flights included?

No. You fly into Entebbe for Kampala and out of Kigali. Airport transfers can be arranged on request.

What should I pack?

Waterproof walking boots with ankle support, long trousers and long sleeves, gardening-style gloves for gripping vegetation, rain gear, warm layers for cool evenings at altitude, insect repellent and a head torch.

Can you tailor the trip?

Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
