Petra Tours Compared: 3 Days, a Week or the Full King’s Highway?

In this story

Petra is the reason most people go to Jordan, and the first glimpse of the Treasury at the end of the Siq tends to live up to it. But Petra is big, the Monastery is a climb beyond the Treasury, and Jordan has Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and the King’s Highway too. So the question is not really whether to go, but how many days to give it and what to add.

This guide is for anyone choosing a Petra tour. We compare every tour on our Jordan tours page, from a three-day break from Amman to walking, cycling, luxury and family trips, and the tours that pair Petra with Egypt, with how much time each one spends at Petra.

Petra with Egypt

Ten tours on our Jordan page combine Petra with Egypt, from a nine-day trip through Jordan and Sinai to three weeks with the Nile and Alexandria. We compare them in detail in our guide to Egypt and Jordan in one trip.

How to choose

By time available. Three days: the short break from Amman. A week: most Jordan tours. Two to three weeks: the Egypt and Jordan combinations.

By time at Petra. A Week in Jordan and Cycling Jordan spend three nights nearby; most others spend two, with Explore Jordan including a two-day pass. The family holiday spends one night, and Journey Through Jordan has one full day.

By budget. The 18–35s trip, the short break and Explore Jordan are the cheapest. Most small-group tours sit in the middle. Stars & Desert Sands and the tour with flights cost the most. Live prices are in the table above.

By fitness. Petra itself involves a lot of walking, and the climb to the Monastery is long. Walking & Hiking and Cycling Jordan are the most active; the 8-day Luxury Jordan, the family holiday and the tours with flights are rated low.

When to go

Many Jordan tours depart all year. The walking and cycling trips run mainly in spring and autumn, and several pages warn that walks can be hot outside winter. The months for each tour are in its fact panel above.
