Solo Escorted Tours With Flights: Trips Where Nobody Asks ‘Just the One?’

In this story

Travelling alone is wonderful right up to the moment someone hands you a menu for two, or a single supplement the size of a second holiday. Solo tours fix both. Everyone in the group is travelling on their own, so dinner conversation is guaranteed, and most give you a room of your own as standard.

This guide is for anyone who wants to travel alone but not be alone. We compare every solo escorted tour with flights on our escorted tours pages, from a four-day break in Kraków to three weeks in New Zealand, with flights from the UK included on all of them, so you can choose by distance, length and style.

How solo tours work

Every tour here is designed for people travelling on their own and includes flights, usually from London. A tour director, holiday director or host travels with the group, and groups are typically between 15 and 27, so these are not small-group adventures. Most pages state a room of your own, and many say there is no single supplement; where a page does not say, ask us before you book. The pages are also clear about who they are not for: couples, and anyone after a small group or an active trip.

Short breaks in Europe (a gentle first go)

Kraków and Auschwitz

Solo Krakow & Auschwitz with Flights – 4 Days

  • 4 days
  • From £779 per person incl. flights
  • Max 25 people
  • Starts and ends in United Kingdom
  • Physical rating: low
  • Flights included
  • Departures in March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November
The Sukiennice Cloth Hall on Kraków’s Main Market Square, Poland
Kraków’s Main Market Square: plenty of space, plenty of cafés, no table for one required.

Four days with a room of your own in a central four-star hotel, return flights and transfers, and a tour director, in a group of 15 to 25. It runs from spring to autumn. For a similar length, Berlin, Dresden, Meissen & Colditz (5 days) stays in four-star superior hotels, and Amsterdam & the Tulips (5 days) is a full-board river cruise at tulip time.

Suits: first-time solo travellers. The honest drawback: short breaks move quickly, and the Auschwitz visit makes for a sombre day.

Five more European breaks last six or seven days. Classical Spain covers Seville, Córdoba and Granada from four-star hotels. Slovenia & Lake Bled and the Black Forest & Alsace stay in one hotel, so you unpack once. Switzerland’s Scenic Railways in Winter is based in Interlaken from January to March, with the Golden Pass and Glacier Express. Iceland for Solo Travellers is five days in Reykjavík with the Golden Circle.

Longer in Europe and the Mediterranean

Croatia by small ship

Solo Croatian Island Explorer Cruise with Flights – 8 Days

  • 8 days
  • From £3,539 per person
  • Max 27 people
  • Starts and ends in United Kingdom
  • Physical rating: low
  • Flights included
  • Departures in May, June, July, August, September, October

Hvar harbour: the boat stops, you step off, someone else worries about the luggage.

Eight days with a guaranteed cabin of your own on a small ship, flights from London and a holiday director, from May to October, with a visit to Krka National Park. Two smaller yacht cruises run from Dubrovnik, with just 19 guests, and from Split to Zadar and the Kornati Islands.

Suits: anyone who likes the idea of a new harbour every day. The honest drawback: departures are limited, and the Split yacht sails only in May.

On land, Turkey (8 days) runs from Kuşadası and Ephesus to Troy and Istanbul in four-star hotels, Classic Sicily (8 days) tours ancient sites and Baroque towns, Northern Cyprus (8 days) is based in a four-star hotel in Kyrenia, and the Balkan Explorer (13 days) covers four countries from Bucharest with a room of your own at no extra cost.

Christmas and New Year, in company

For many solo travellers, Christmas is the hardest time to be at home. Four tours are built around it, each with flights from London and a host: Christmas in Venice & the Veneto (5 days), Christmas in Northern Cyprus (8 days) in Kyrenia, and two that see in the New Year too, each with a New Year’s Eve gala: the Costa Brava (11 days) and Porto and Cascais (11 days). Each has one departure a year, so they are worth booking early.

Long haul: Asia, Africa and the Middle East

Jordan and Petra

Solo Jordan & Petra with Flights – 7 Days

  • 7 days
  • From £2,309 per person incl. flights
  • Starts and ends in United Kingdom
  • Physical rating: low
  • Flights included
  • Departures in February, April, May, August, September
Mount Fuji reflected in a lake at dawn, Japan

Suits: travellers who want somewhere exotic with everything arranged. The honest drawback: larger groups, and not every page states a room of your own, so check when you enquire.

How to choose

By time available. Four to seven days: the European short breaks. Eight to 13 days: the Mediterranean, the Croatian cruises, Christmas trips and most of Asia. Two weeks or more: Africa, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand.

By budget. The short European breaks are the cheapest, the Mediterranean and Christmas trips sit in the middle, and long haul costs the most. Every price includes flights. Live prices are in the table above.

By fitness. Almost all are rated low; the Chile tours, Namibia and Sri Lanka are rated medium.

By travel style. Choose a one-base trip such as Slovenia, the Black Forest or Northern Cyprus to unpack once, a cruise for a new harbour each day, or a touring holiday for variety.

When to go

Most European solo tours run in spring and autumn, the Christmas trips depart in late December, and the Switzerland winter rail trip runs from January to March. The long-haul tours have only a few departures each year, often in spring and autumn. The months for each tour are in its fact panel above.

Frequently asked questions

Do solo tours charge a single supplement?

Many of these tours say there is no single supplement and give you a room of your own. Not every page says so, so ask us for the exact terms of the tour you like.

How big are the groups on solo tours?

Typically between 15 and 27 travellers, with some up to 35. The Saint Lucia trips are up to 20, and one Croatian yacht cruise has just 19 guests.

Are flights included on solo tours?

Yes, every tour in this guide includes flights, usually from London. Some also include internal flights or a UK airport lounge.

Can couples join a solo tour?

These trips are designed for people travelling on their own, and the tour pages say they are not for you if you are travelling as a couple.

Is there a solo tour for Christmas?

Yes: Venice, Northern Cyprus, the Costa Brava and Porto and Cascais, the last two including New Year.

What is the best first solo tour?

A short break close to home, such as Kraków or Classical Spain, or a one-base trip like Slovenia & Lake Bled.
