Tour overview

This 7-day escorted tour shows you the best of southern and western Iceland in comfort, from thundering waterfalls and black sand beaches to the geysers of the Golden Circle and the rift valley of Thingvellir, with the chance to see the Northern Lights. A tour director travels with you throughout, with a local expert in Reykjavík, and you travel by comfortable coach with extra legroom. You stay six nights in hotels: three in Reykjavík and one each in Vík, Flúðir and Borgarnes. Breakfast is included daily, with four dinners, including a welcome reception with wine and canapés and a farewell dinner, and airport transfers, hotel tips and porterage are included.

Your journey begins in Reykjavík with a welcome reception, then an evening excursion in search of the aurora borealis, the Northern Lights, weather permitting. The next day you follow the south coast through the country of Njál's Saga, visiting a geothermal power station and the Lava Centre, then the waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, with views of the volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, before reaching Vík and its black sand beach.

The Golden Circle brings the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and the erupting hot springs of Geysir. At Friðheimar, a family-run greenhouse farm, you learn how tomatoes are grown with geothermal heat and taste the results, with time to soak in the Secret Lagoon, Iceland's oldest pool. You then visit Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the North American and Eurasian plates meet and where Iceland's parliament first met in 930 AD.

In Borgarnes you discover the Viking age at the Settlement Centre and see the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls and Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring, before tasting rye bread baked underground in a hot spring at a family horse farm. Back in Reykjavík, a local expert shows you the old town, Höfði House and the Hallgrímskirkja church, and you choose between a FlyOver Iceland flight ride and the Perlan museum before a farewell dinner.

The physical rating is low. This tour suits travellers who want to see Iceland's highlights in comfort, with the chance of the Northern Lights.
