North Atlantic Cruise: Scotland, Faroes & Iceland – 10 Days
Iona, St Kilda, the Faroe Islands and Iceland by polar-class expedition ship, with an expert team and full board.
Tour overview
This 10-day expedition cruise sails north from Scotland to Iceland through the islands of the North Atlantic, linking ancient pilgrimage sites, remote seabird colonies and Nordic harbour towns. You travel aboard the Ocean Victory, a modern polar-class ship with an X-Bow for stability, staying nine nights in an outside-view stateroom, most with balconies, with observation decks, hydraulic viewing platforms and two outdoor hot tubs. An expedition team leads shore visits and lectures, and all meals are included on board. The voyage is open to travellers aged 12 and over, with a transfer to Reykjavik airport or the city centre at the end.
You board in Troon on the Firth of Clyde and sail to Iona, where St Columba founded his abbey in AD563 and brought Christianity to Scotland. In Stornoway, capital of the Western Isles and a stronghold of the Gaelic language, you can visit the Calanais Stones, a Neolithic stone circle some 5,000 years old. Weather permitting, you then land on St Kilda, Britain's only dual UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the ruins of a village abandoned in 1930 stand among vast colonies of gannets, fulmars and puffins.

In the Faroe Islands you visit Vágur on Suðuroy, with its clifftop views and dramatically sited football pitch, and Tórshavn, one of the world's smallest capitals, with its turf-roofed old town and National Gallery. A day at sea crossing the Norwegian Sea brings seabird-watching on deck and lectures on the region's history and ecology.
Reaching Iceland, you explore Djúpivogur, a harbour town framed by fjords and known for its granite egg sculptures, and Heimaey in the volcanic Westman Islands, where lava from the 1973 Eldfell eruption buried part of the town. The voyage ends in Reykjavik.
The physical rating is low, though landings by Zodiac depend on weather and sea conditions. This cruise suits curious travellers and birdwatchers who want to see some of Europe's most remote islands in comfort. Late spring is a fine time to visit, with long days and seabird colonies at their busiest, and the expedition team shares its knowledge of the islands throughout.
