Tour overview

This 8-day trek explores the Anti-Atlas, a remote and little-visited mountain range in southern Morocco, where ancient Amazigh villages, almond groves and red rock gorges lie far from the tourist trail. Groups have between 5 and 16 walkers aged 16 and over, with a tour leader, local mountain guides and a camp crew. You stay seven nights: a hotel in Agadir, five nights of full-service wild camping in the mountains, with tents set up and meals cooked by the crew, and a final night in a traditional riad in Taroudant. All breakfasts, five lunches and six dinners are included, with fresh tagines, bread and mint tea prepared in camp.

After meeting in Agadir on the Atlantic coast, you drive inland to the walled market town of Taroudant for lunch, then on to the village of Irghem, where your trek begins with a walk to the first campsite. The next day is a long one, climbing over a col and a series of spurs into a broad valley to reach the village of Tagdicht, where you camp near terraced fields.

A steeper day takes you to the summit of Jebel Aklim, at 2,531m one of the highest peaks in the Anti-Atlas, with views stretching across the range and, on a clear day, to the snow-capped High Atlas. Over the following days you complete a circuit of the Aklim range, passing through the wonderfully remote village of Irtem, crossing cols and following valleys where you can cool off in natural rock pools.

Leaving the mountains in the early afternoon of the seventh day, you travel by minibus to Taroudant province for a final night in a riad, with time to wander the town's souks and ramparts, before returning to Agadir the next morning.

The physical rating is medium, with daily walks of several hours on rough mountain paths and one summit day. This trek suits active walkers who are comfortable camping and want to discover a wild, authentic corner of Morocco with expert local support. Departures run in spring and autumn, when temperatures in the mountains are best for walking. A good pair of broken-in boots is essential.
