Tour overview

This 15-day small-group safari combines East Africa's most famous reserve with the highlights of southern Africa, in comfortable, hand-picked lodges. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with leaders and expert local guides, and flights link Nairobi, Johannesburg, Kruger and Victoria Falls. Feature stays include Zebra Valley Camp in the Maasai Mara and Mdluli Safari Lodge beside Kruger. Most meals are included, from welcome dinners to lunches on safari, with an arrival transfer in Nairobi.

From Nairobi you head into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, with a boat trip among hippos and fish eagles and a visit to Elsamere, the former home of Joy Adamson of Born Free fame. At Lake Nakuru National Park a game drive looks for white and black rhinos, lions and flocks of flamingos and pelicans. You then cross to the Maasai Mara for three nights at Zebra Valley Camp, with a talk and village visit in the Loita Hills, full days of 4WD game drives in search of the big five, sundowners on the plains and the option of a sunrise balloon flight.

After returning to Nairobi you fly to Johannesburg and drive to Kruger National Park for two nights at Mdluli Safari Lodge, on a community-owned concession, with afternoon and full-day 4WD safaris and sundowners. Mdluli is on a community-owned concession, so your stay also supports the people who live alongside the park.

A flight takes you to Victoria Falls for a guided tour of the thundering falls and a dinner cruise on the Zambezi. The trip ends with two nights at Chobe Safari Lodge in Botswana, with a river cruise among bathing elephants and a game drive in Chobe National Park.

The physical rating is medium, with early starts for game drives. This safari suits travellers who want both East and southern Africa's greatest wildlife in one trip, in comfort, with flights between regions arranged. Lodges are chosen for their settings, from the hillside above Lake Nakuru to the banks of the Chobe River, and the mix of game drives, boat trips, river cruises and a cultural visit gives you many different ways to see the wildlife and meet local people.
