Tour overview

This 9-day overland adventure is designed for travellers aged 18 to 35 who want to see the best of Botswana's wildlife on a budget, camping under African skies from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls. You travel in a purpose-built overland vehicle with a group leader, a cook and up to 22 fellow travellers. You stay eight nights: one in a hotel in Johannesburg, five at campsites with facilities and two at a bush camp with basic facilities in the Okavango Delta, sleeping in two-person canvas dome tents with mattresses provided. Eight breakfasts, three lunches and seven dinners are included, most of them cooked at camp.

Your adventure begins in Johannesburg with a welcome meeting. The next morning you cross into Botswana to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, a community-run reserve on the edge of the Kalahari that protects black and white rhinos. As the sun sets, you head out in an open vehicle to see the rhinos at their most active, along with zebras, giraffes and wildebeest at the waterholes.

From Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta, a 4×4 takes you to a bush camp on the edge of the Guma Lagoon for two nights. Far from any light pollution, the night skies are spectacular and you fall asleep to the sound of hippos. The highlight is a trip in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, as your poler guides you through papyrus channels and lily-covered lagoons, with a bush walk in search of elephants, lechwe and warthogs and a swim from one of the islands.

Heading east, you camp at Gweta, near the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, and join a local guide for a sundowner walk through a forest of ancient baobabs. Chobe National Park, home to an estimated 70,000 Kalahari elephants as well as buffalo, lions and leopards, is the setting for an early morning game drive in an open safari vehicle. You then cross into Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls, where the trip ends with an orientation walk and the chance to stay on for rafting or a helicopter flight over the falls.

The physical rating is medium. Everyone helps with camp tasks, and some campsites have only basic facilities. This trip suits young, sociable travellers who love wildlife and want an authentic safari adventure at a great price.
