Tour overview

This 8-day winter trip is based north of the Arctic Circle at Rajamaa, a group of wooden chalets on Pitkäsaari island in the River Muonio, with views across to Finland. A local family has run it for decades, and it has a dining room and a sauna. You spend six nights here and one night in a log cabin deep in the forest.

Each day brings a different activity, with all specialist equipment and Arctic clothing provided. You snowshoe through the forest looking for animal tracks, then drive your own husky sled in pairs for about 15 kilometres with a local musher. You also spend a morning with a reindeer-herding Sámi family, travelling by reindeer sled to their hut to talk by the fire over lunch.

After an introduction to forest skiing, you set off on a two-day trip across frozen lakes and pine-covered hills, carrying only a daypack while your gear goes by snowmobile. The group cooks dinner together in a log cabin heated by wood-burners. Day 4 is free for an optional snowmobile safari or rest, and evening talks cover lynx, wolverines, bears and wolves. On clear, dark nights there is a chance of the Northern Lights.
