Tour overview

This 12-day small-group tour combines the Baltic capitals with gentle walks in national parks, on islands and along the coast, from Lithuania to Finland. Groups have between 4 and 16 travellers aged 16 and over, with a tour leader throughout. You travel by private bus and ferry, and stay eleven nights in mostly three- and four-star hotels: two in Vilnius, one in the seaside city of Liepāja, two in Riga, two in Kuressaare on Saaremaa, two in Tallinn and two in Helsinki. Breakfast is included daily, with a welcome dinner.

In Vilnius you tour the baroque old town before visiting Kernavė, Lithuania's ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, walking in Neris Regional Park and seeing the red-brick island castle at Trakai. A drive west takes you to Žemaitija National Park for a hike and a visit to Plokštinė, a former Soviet nuclear missile base turned Cold War museum.

In Latvia you visit Kuldīga, said to be the country's prettiest town, with the Venta Rapid, Europe's widest waterfall, and a vineyard tasting, before reaching Riga for a guided walk among its Art Nouveau buildings and medieval lanes. A coastal walk at Saulkrasti and lunch in Pärnu lead to the Estonian island of Saaremaa, with its Kaali meteorite crater, windmills and Kuressaare Castle, and a day exploring peaceful Hiiumaa, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with historic lighthouses.

In Tallinn a walking tour takes you through the medieval upper and lower towns and into the creative Kalamaja district and Balti Jaam market. A ferry across the Gulf of Finland brings you to Helsinki, with a walk in Sipoonkorpi National Park and a visit to the old wooden town of Porvoo, before a sightseeing tour of the Finnish capital and a free afternoon.

The physical rating is medium, with walks of a few hours on mostly easy trails. This trip suits active travellers who want to combine the Baltic capitals with nature, islands and fresh air. The mix of capitals, forests, islands and coastline gives a rounded picture of the region, with the long light of the northern summer.
