Rocky Mountaineer Tours Compared: With an Alaska Cruise or Without?

In this story

Two days on the Rocky Mountaineer, travelling by daylight through the mountains and canyons of British Columbia between the Rockies and Vancouver, is the centrepiece of every tour in this guide. The real question is what you wrap around it: more time among the lakes and glaciers of Banff and Jasper, a couple of days in Victoria, or a week sailing the Inside Passage to Alaska.

This guide is for anyone planning a Rocky Mountaineer holiday. We compare every Rocky Mountaineer tour on our Canada tours page, three without a cruise and four with one, so you can decide on the shape of the trip first and the details second.

How to choose

By time available. Nine to 11 days: the three rail tours. Sixteen to 18 days: the four tours with an Alaska cruise.

By budget. Rockies & Glaciers of Alberta and Banff, Jasper, Vancouver & Victoria are the least expensive, though the first does not include flights. The Deluxe Alaska Cruise costs the most. Live prices are in the table above.

By fitness. Every tour here is rated low, with short walks and optional excursions.

By travel style. All are escorted by a tour director in coach-sized groups, not small groups. Choose the cruise tours if you want to unpack for a week, and the rail-only tours for more nights in the mountains and Victoria.

When to go

These tours run from spring to early autumn, roughly April or May to September, with Banff, Jasper, Vancouver & Victoria also departing in October. The Alaska cruise tours run from April or May to September. The months for each tour are in its fact panel above.

Before you travel, check the FCDO travel advice for Canada and, for the cruise tours, the USA, including entry requirements.
