Map & location
Santana, Madeira, Portugal
Quinta do Furao crowns the cliffs of Madeira’s north coast above the village of Santana, famous for its colourful, triangular thatched houses. Here you’re surrounded by terraced vineyards, patchwork fields and deep green mountainsides that plunge straight into the Atlantic.
This is classic Madeira walking country, with levadas, forest paths and lookouts within easy reach – yet you’re still only around 45 minutes’ drive from the restaurants, museums and harbour of Funchal. A hire car is ideal to really make the most of the scenery and reach viewpoints at your own pace.
- Approx. transfer time from airport 45 minutes
Facilities
Pool & outdoors
Despite the wild Atlantic setting, Quinta do Furao has a surprisingly comprehensive pool offering:
• Outdoor saltwater pool – Cliff-edge pool with wide sunbathing terrace, loungers and parasols; sublime ocean and mountain views.
• Indoor heated pool – Freshwater, great for cooler days and winter stays.
• Towels – Pool towels are provided free of charge.
There’s no direct beach at the hotel due to the dramatic cliffs, but several pebble and natural beaches can be reached by car around the north and east coasts. As with many Madeiran properties, this is more about views and nature than a classic sandy beach stay.
Spa, sports & wellness
Quinta do Furao leans into quiet wellbeing, good wine and time outdoors:
• Spa & wellness – Compact spa zone featuring a sauna, whirlpool and a menu of massage and beauty treatments (treatments extra; spa generally for 12yrs+). Usual opening hours approx. 08:00–20:00, subject to change.
• Gym – Small fitness room with cardio equipment and free weights for a quick workout before hitting the trails.
• Wine cellar – Atmospheric cellar where you can learn about Madeira wine production and sample different styles; a must for oenophiles.
• Reading room & lounges – Cosy indoor spaces with comfy chairs, ideal when mist rolls in from the mountains.
Facilities and opening times can vary by season and occupancy; some services may carry an extra charge.
