Zululand

The enigmatic culture or the Zulu tribe, the stark contrast between the rugged, green expanses of land and the suburban developments around Durban… everything about Zululand seems memorable and fascinating.

Zululand is a region in the north-eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. Dominated by the Zulu tribe, it offers visitors an insight into traditions of this enigmatic culture. Visitors find it fascinating, and one can only struggle to wrap one’s head around traditions like the Lobola, the tradition in which the groom must give the bride’s family 11 cows as a dowry, plus an extra bovine for the wedding feast, and build a private house for the bride before being able to marry. Quite fascinating indeed.

Zululand, South Africa Holiday Destinations Guide

Bordered to the west by the highest mountain range in South Africa and to the east by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, it is easy to see why KwaZulu- Natal is one of South Africa’s best loved holiday destinations. Combine this with a rich and diverse culture plus some of the finest game reserves on the continent for a fantastic holiday experience.

Most of our clients traverse Zululand on the way to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve and wetlands near St Lucia for an exploration of the estuary and the chance to see crocodiles, hippos, and elusive bird species like the African Kingfisher Eagle in their natural habitat.

That is not to say Zululand is merely a transient destination. Nongoma, Paulpietersburg, Pongola, and Magudu to mention but a few, are popular international destinations in their own right.

Our Grand Tour of South Africa includes a visit to Zululand. Should you wish to find out more, please chat with a South Africa specialist at Travelisto, request a video call, or send us an email.
