Costa Rica Holidays
Costa Rica is an ecotourism paradise. Twenty five percent of the country is nature reserve.
The magnetism of Costa Rica emanates almost entirely from its bewildering natural beauty. Twenty five percent of the country is nature reserve. It’s culture, friendly and welcoming people, pre-Columbian history and archeological sites, and cuisine are not to be overlooked.
True enough, Costa Rica is an ecotourism paradise. The relatively small country boasts more than 100 species of mammals and over 800 species of birds. It’s national parks are perfect for hikers and nature enthusiasts to explore the awe-inspiring rainforests teaming with scarlet macaws, parrots and toucans, hummingbirds, a hundreds more species. The Corcovado National Park, and Tortuguero National Park come highly recommended.
For a whimsical experience, the Monteverde Cloud Forest, perennially bathed in mist, is at the top of most nature-loving traveller’s bucket list. And a hike around the Arenal Volcano’s cone, as active as ever, makes for an exhilarating experience.
Nature aside, Costa Rica is also famed for it’s friendly, welcoming people, and rich pre-Columbian history, are reason enough to visit the small central-American country. Over 2 000 archeological sites suggest the native civilization was prosperous at different times in history. The name Costa Rica – meaning Rich Coast in Spanish – suggests the Spanish conquistadors encountered a wealthy civilization when first arriving at it’s beautiful Caribbean coastline. The Guayabo National Monument, though to be perhaps two thousand years old, makes for an immersive exploration of Costa Rica’s history before its encounter with European cultures.
When to visit Costa Rica
Located in the tropics, Costa Rica experiences warm weather all year round and just two seasons: wet (May-November) and dry (December-April). The dry season is much more popular for travellers, meaning that tourist traffic can be high in many visitor destinations; the wet season offers a fair alternative, especially during the drier months of September and October, since this is the shoulder season for travel.
The weather patterns are different on the Pacific & Caribbean coasts. The Caribbean coast has lush tropical forests which make it wetter all year than other parts of the country, except for a mild drier season in September and October; the weather in the Pacific tends to be the exact opposite of this.
