Self-Guided Walks in the Italian Dolomites – 8 Days
Lago di Braies, the Nemes Alp and the Tre Cime from a four-star base in Dobbiaco, at your own pace with route notes and half board.
Tour overview
This 8-day self-guided walking holiday explores the Dolomites from a single comfortable base, so you unpack once and set out each day on a different trail through the mountains of South Tyrol and the Veneto. There is no guide: detailed route notes and maps are provided, and you walk at your own pace. You stay seven nights at the four-star Park Hotel Bellevue in Dobbiaco, a hotel of old-world charm with a spa, sauna, steam room and pool, on a half-board basis with breakfast and dinner every day.
The first walk ascends gently from the hotel along peaceful country lanes, through picture-perfect Tyrolean villages and hamlets, each with its own chapel or church. Next day a short bus and a gondola ride lift you to the high pastures of the Rotwand at 1,914m, below the limestone peaks of the Croda Rossa, for a walk across the Nemes Alp.

One of the finest trails of the week takes in Lago di Braies, a jewel-like lake below sheer mountain walls, the Grünwald Valley and the Hochalm, a full-day hike with around 800m of ascent and descent. Another day takes you into the Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park in the Italian-speaking Veneto, following a disused railway line from Cimabanche and climbing through high pastures to the Rifugio Ra Stua.
A cable car carries you towards Mount Elmo for a walk along the crest of the Carnic Alps to the Klammbachhütte, with views into Austria. The grand finale is the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the three great rock towers that are the symbol of the Dolomites, reached by bus to the Rifugio Auronzo for a walk around their base.
The physical rating is medium, with daily walks on mountain trails and some longer days. This holiday suits independent walkers who want to enjoy the Dolomites at their own pace, with a comfortable hotel, spa and good food at the end of each day. The hotel can advise on shorter alternatives on any day, and evenings bring a well-earned dinner and the chance to unwind in the spa.
