Sumatra Adventure: Orangutans, Volcanoes & Lake Toba – 10 Days
Jungle trekking in Gunung Leuser, the Sibayak volcano and Samosir Island on Lake Toba, in a group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 10-day small-group adventure explores northern Sumatra, home to one of the best places on Earth to see orangutans in the wild, active volcanoes and the enormous crater lake of Lake Toba. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a local leader throughout and specialist trekking guides in the national park. You stay nine nights: four in hotels, four in guesthouses and one camping in the jungle with no facilities. Nine breakfasts, four lunches and a campsite dinner are included.
Your adventure begins in Medan, a city of palaces, mansions and night markets. A drive along bumpy, winding roads brings you to Bukit Lawang, a peaceful village on the Bohorok river at the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Over two days you trek through the rainforest with experienced guides who point out orangutan nests, edible plants, monkeys and birds. Orangutans that were once rehabilitated here now live wild, so sightings are a real possibility. You spend a night camping in the jungle, with dinner cooked by your guides.

In Berastagi, home of the Karo Batak people and their traditional longhouses, you climb Mount Sibayak, an active volcano of 2,094m, along a shady jungle path that opens into an alpine landscape near the steaming fumaroles at the summit. Afterwards you can soak in natural hot springs heated by the volcano.
Lake Toba, formed by a supervolcano around 70,000 years ago, is the largest volcanic lake in the world. On the way you stop at Dokan village and the Sipiso-Piso waterfall, then take a ferry to Samosir Island, an island the size of Singapore in the middle of the lake, for two nights in a lakeside guesthouse. A full-day tour takes in the Stone Chairs, the Simanindo Museum in a traditional Batak house, ancient tombs, a viewpoint over the lake and a Batak dance performance. A wooden boat and a drive return you to Medan.
The physical rating is medium, with jungle trekking, a steep volcano climb and a night camping. This trip suits adventurous travellers who love wildlife and the outdoors.

How hard is the volcano climb?
The trail can be steep, muddy and slippery. Long trousers and a trekking pole are recommended.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
Not quite the right fit? Make it tailor-made.
