Tour overview

This 8-day family safari is designed for parents travelling with children aged 6 and over, combining Victoria Falls with Botswana's most varied wildlife areas at a family-friendly pace. Groups have between 2 and 16 travellers, all families, with a leader throughout. You stay in comfortable hotels and lodges with pools, with family rooms or triples where available, and travel by private vehicle with a 4×4 for game drives. A mix of breakfasts, lunches and dinners is included, along with an arrival transfer. Most journeys between stops take a few hours, with breaks along the way.

The adventure starts in Victoria Falls with a welcome meeting and an evening at the Simunye show, followed by a guided sunrise tour of the falls, where the Zambezi plunges 108 metres into a narrow gorge. Crossing into Botswana, you stay two nights at a resort on the Chobe River at Kasane, with a 4×4 game drive in Chobe National Park, famous for its elephants and hippos, and a sunset cruise on the river.

Next you travel to the Makgadikgadi Pans in the Kalahari, one of the largest salt flats in the world, staying at Planet Baobab among ancient baobab trees. Here children can watch a habituated meerkat colony at close range as the animals play and stand on guard, and explore the edge of the Ntwetwe Pan, looking for desert species such as bat-eared foxes and springbok. The lodge's thatched huts and pool make it a favourite with children.

The trip ends in Maun, gateway to the Okavango Delta, with a visit to a community in Shorobe to see traditional basket weaving and a full day exploring the delta's waterways by mokoro, a dugout canoe poled by local guides, watching for birds and wildlife among the reeds and lagoons. There is an optional helicopter flight over the delta on the final morning.

The physical rating is low, with free time at the pools between activities. This trip suits families looking for a safe, well-organised first safari, with a good mix of animals, culture and fun, and other families to share it with. Your leader handles border crossings and transfers throughout.
