Tour overview

This 8-day small-group journey explores the coast and fjords of central Norway in style, between the historic city of Trondheim and the mountains and fjords around Valldal. A dedicated guide travels with the group, which numbers no more than sixteen, and you travel by private vehicle, express boat, fjord ferry and scenic railway. You stay seven nights in hand-picked hotels: the landmark Britannia in Trondheim, a restored clipfish factory on the coast and a boutique hotel in Valldal. Breakfast is included daily, along with four lunches and six dinners, and gratuities for local staff are covered.

After a welcome dinner in Trondheim, you take the tram into the forested hills and walk the final stretch of the St Olav pilgrimage route to Nidaros Cathedral. A city tour climbs to Kristiansten Fortress before an express boat carries you along the coast to Sveggvika, a clipfish factory turned guesthouse, for a night with a beer tasting.

In Kristiansund a hands-on workshop explores the stockfish and clipfish traditions that shaped the coast and its cuisine. Crossing fjords by ferry and climbing the Eagle Road, you reach the Geirangerfjord, one of Norway's most beautiful, to explore its cliffs and waterfalls by RIB. A day in Valldal lets you choose an experience, from kayaking towards Tafjorden to walking mountain paths.

On the way back you drive the hairpins of Trollstigen to Åndalsnes and ride the Rauma Railway through the Romsdalen valley, one of Scandinavia's great train journeys, before a final night in Trondheim.

The physical rating is medium. This journey suits travellers who want an authentic, comfortable and food-focused experience of Norway.
