Tour overview

This 21-day small-group journey combines southern Peru's great sights with two of South America's most exciting cities and one of its greatest natural wonders, flying between the highlights. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader in Peru and local guides in Argentina and Brazil. You stay twenty nights in hotels. Twenty breakfasts, three lunches and two dinners are included, among them a traditional pachamanca dinner in Nazca, cooked in an earth oven, and a farewell dinner in Rio, leaving plenty of freedom to try ceviche, Argentine steak and Brazilian churrasco.

After a walking tour of Lima's historic centre, you travel down the coast to Paracas for a boat trip to the Islas Ballestas, home to sea lions, penguins and seabirds, and on to Nazca, famous for its desert lines. In Arequipa, the White City, a local guide shows you its colonial heart, before you climb onto the Altiplano to Puno for a tour of Lake Titicaca at 3,820m.

A scenic bus across the high plains brings you to Cusco, the old Inca capital, with free time to explore. You drive through the Sacred Valley, take a train along the Urubamba River to Aguas Calientes and catch an early bus up to Machu Picchu. After more time in Cusco, you fly back to Lima.

A flight carries you to Buenos Aires, Argentina's fiery capital, where a half-day tour with a local guide reveals the colourful La Boca district, Recoleta and the city's tango culture. Flying north to Iguazu, you explore the Argentinian side of the falls, walking along catwalks to the thundering Devil's Throat, and the Brazilian side for panoramic views. Your journey ends in Rio de Janeiro, with a guided tour of the city, including Sugarloaf Mountain and the statue of Christ the Redeemer, and a farewell dinner.

The physical rating is medium, with altitude in Peru and early starts. This trip suits travellers with time who want to see three countries' highlights in one well-paced journey. Four internal flights are included, saving long overland journeys, and departures run year-round. Pack layers for the Andes.
