Tour overview

This 17-day small-group adventure combines two of South America's great experiences: island-hopping through the Galapagos and hiking the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Groups have up to 16 travellers aged 15 and over, with leaders in Ecuador, the Galapagos and Peru. You stay thirteen nights in hotels and three nights camping on the Inca Trail, in twin-share tents set up by porters with foam mats provided. Thirteen breakfasts, nine lunches and three dinners are included, with all meals cooked by the trekking team on the trail. Flights from Quito to the Galapagos and back, and on to Lima and Cusco, are included.

Your trip begins in Quito, set at 2,850m in the Andes, with a walking tour of its historic district. A flight takes you to San Cristobal Island, where you snorkel with sea lions at La Loberia and take a boat to Leon Dormido, better known as Kicker Rock, a towering rock where you may spot sharks, rays and turtles. A private speedboat crosses to Isabela, the largest island, for a boat trip to Las Tintoreras, known as Shark Alley, and a hike up Sierra Negra, one of the most active volcanoes in the islands.

On Santa Cruz you walk to the white sands of Tortuga Bay and see giant tortoises in the highlands before flying back to Quito and on to Lima, Peru's capital. From there you fly to Cusco, once the capital of the Inca Empire, and drive through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo to prepare for the trek.

Over four days you hike the Inca Trail, climbing to Dead Woman's Pass at around 4,200m on the hardest day, crossing Runkuracay Pass and passing Inca ruins and cloud forest, before arriving through the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu. If Inca Trail permits are not available for your dates, an alternative trek or rail journey is arranged instead. You return to Cusco for a final night.

The physical rating is high, with a demanding trek at altitude and early starts. This trip suits fit, active travellers who want wildlife, mountains and ancient history in a single adventure.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
