Which Sri Lanka Tour Is Right for You? Every Escorted Tour Compared

In this story

Sri Lanka packs ancient cities, tea hills, leopards and a coastline that could make a postcard blush into one island. That is exactly why choosing a tour is hard: almost all of them visit Sigiriya and Kandy, so the real differences are in the length, the hotels, the pace and what else is bolted on.

This guide is for anyone comparing escorted tours of Sri Lanka. We line up every tour on our Sri Lanka tours page, from a budget week to three weeks with a Maldives boat trip, and say who each one suits and where it falls short.

Two tours finish with six nights aboard a traditional Maldivian dhoni, snorkelling and visiting local islands, with all meals on board and the flight to Malé included. Luxury India & Sri Lanka (19 days) pairs Delhi, Jaipur, the Taj Mahal and Varanasi with Sigiriya, Kandy and the tea country, with up to 12 in the group and flights within India and to Sri Lanka included. It is not for anyone who wants a beach.

How to choose

By time available. A week: Simply Sri Lanka or the seven-day Highlights. Nine days: the two luxury short tours. Two weeks: Discover, Real Food, Luxury in Depth, Wonders or one of the tours with flights. Three weeks: the 22-day Maldives combination or India and Sri Lanka.

By budget. Simply Sri Lanka, the seven-day Highlights and Sri Lanka for 18–35s are the cheapest. Real Food, the Pekoe Trail, Discover and the cycling trip sit in the middle. The luxury, family, Maldives and flight-inclusive tours cost the most, though the flight-inclusive prices cover your flights too.

By fitness. Most tours are rated low or medium. The Pekoe Trail and the cycling trip are the most demanding, and Sigiriya’s steps feature on most itineraries; the Simply Sri Lanka page puts the climb at about 1,200 steps.

By travel style. Small groups of up to 12 to 18 on most tours; larger coach groups on the flight-inclusive tours. Choose Luxury in Depth, Wonders or the nine-day luxury tour for the best hotels, and the 18–35s trip for hostels and company.

When to go

Several tours, including Simply Sri Lanka, Real Food, Luxury in Depth and Sri Lanka for 18–35s, depart in every month of the year, and most others run for much of the year; the dates for each tour are on its page.
