Massive herds of elephants, enormous blue whales, leopards, myriads of tropical fish and colourful birds, playful schools of dolphins… even if your only remotely interested in wildlife-watching, Sri Lanka’s natural wealth will capture your attention and leave you with lifetime memories of animal encounters.

Elephants are perhaps the most obvious attraction. They are hard to miss. The best places to see elephants in Sri Lanka include the Uda Walawe National Park, Minneriya Nations Park, Kaudulla National Park, Bundala National Park, and Yala National Park.

Yala National Park in the south is overall the most popular. In its tropical thorn forests and lagoons you’ll be able to spot leopards, elephants, sloth bears, water, buffaloes, and flamingos among many other species.

Uda Walawe, however, is a fantastic sanctuary too and often compared with some of the most famous national parks in East Africa, at least for elephants. This huge chunk of savannah grassland centred on the Uda Walawe reservoir is the closest Sri Lanka East Africa. There are herds of buffalo, sambar deer, crocodiles, masses of birds, and Indian elephants.

Travelisto’s Discover Sri Lanka Tour  includes safari experiences in Yala National Park or Uda Walawe.
