Luxury Small Group Tours: Where the Extra Money Actually Goes

In this story

“Luxury” is the most overworked word in travel. It’s been applied to everything from a hotel with a kettle to a glamping pod with a slightly better duvet. So when a small-group tour costs a good deal more than its standard sibling, it’s fair to ask where, exactly, the money goes. Is it gold taps, or something you’ll actually notice?

We sell both kinds, so here’s the honest answer, based on what our luxury and premium small-group tours actually include, with real examples, and a few things the extra money doesn’t buy.

The quick answer

  • Smaller groups: usually no more than 12, against 16 or more on many standard trips and up to 40 or 50 on coach tours.
  • Better, more memorable beds: upscale hotels plus at least one “feature stay”, such as a tented camp, a houseboat or a hot-spring inn.
  • Easier travel: a private vehicle rather than public buses, and usually an arrival transfer.
  • More included: more dinners, specialist guides and extra time at the big sights.
  • What it doesn’t buy: five stars everywhere, every meal, or flights.

1. Smaller groups

The single biggest difference. Most of our luxury tours cap the group at 12, and a few go smaller. That means one vehicle, quicker check-ins, a table for everyone at dinner and a leader who has time to answer your questions. It also means you get to the viewpoint before the coach parties do, which is a luxury no thread count can match.

Example: Luxury Japan Highlights

  • 9 days
  • From £4,450 per person

A night at an onsen inn: dinner in your robe is not only allowed, it’s expected.

Nine days for up to 12 with a local leader, quality hotels and bullet trains: Tokyo with Senso-ji and a Sumida River cruise, Kamakura’s Great Buddha, a night at a traditional hot-spring inn near the snow monkeys of Yamanouchi, Kanazawa’s gardens and samurai district, and Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari. Four dinners are included.

Where the money goes: the small group, the onsen inn and the welcome dinner. What it doesn’t buy: it’s a short trip, and most lunches are up to you.

2. Better beds, and some unforgettable ones

Luxury tours use upscale hotels, but the real difference is the “feature stay”: a night or two somewhere you’d never find on a standard trip, and might struggle to book yourself.

  • Max 12 people

Wadi Rum’s dome camp: the stars are free, the bed is very much not a sleeping bag.

3. Easier travel

Many standard small-group trips travel like locals, on public buses and trains with your own bags, which is great fun and great value. Luxury tours usually swap that for a private vehicle, an arrival transfer and less luggage-wrangling. Where a train is the best way to go, they keep it: Luxury Spain uses the high-speed train, Luxury Uzbekistan the fast train to Samarkand, and Luxury Sri Lanka keeps the scenic railway into tea country.

Example: Luxury Sri Lanka in Depth

Luxury Sri Lanka in Depth: Sigiriya, Tea Country & Yala – 14 Days

  • 14 days
  • From £3,137 per person
  • Max 12 people
  • Negombo, Sri Lanka to Colombo, Sri Lanka
  • Physical rating: medium
  • Flights not included
  • Year-round departures

Where the money goes: the hotels, the private vehicle and the specialist guides. What it doesn’t buy: early starts for the safaris, and the Sri Lanka ETA.

4. More included: meals, experts and time

More meals. Luxury tours typically include more dinners, often at restaurants you’d pick yourself: Luxury Jordan includes six dinners in eight nights, among them a home-cooked meal with a Petra family and a traditional zarb in the desert.

Specialist guides. A sommelier among Peru’s vineyards, a botanist in Kandy, a resident naturalist in Botswana.

More time where it matters. Two visits to Machu Picchu on Luxury Peru, a second day at Petra on Luxury Jordan, and the Alhambra twice on Luxury Spain, once by day and once by night.

The Colca Canyon: the condors don’t care what you paid, but the riverside resort helps.

Where the money goes: the hotels, the second Machu Picchu visit and the experts. What it doesn’t buy: the Inca Trail, and time at altitude is still time at altitude.

What the extra money doesn’t buy

Five stars everywhere. In remote places, “luxury” means the best available, which might be a charming lodge rather than a grand hotel. Each tour page lists the hotels, so you can see exactly where you’ll stay.

Every meal. Even luxury tours leave some lunches and dinners free, which is often a good thing.

Flights. Most luxury tours are land-only. We can add flights, in any class you like.

An easier landscape. A luxury tour of Iceland still has long drives, and a luxury safari still has 5.30am game drives. The animals don’t do lie-ins.

Icebergs in the Jokulsarlon lagoon
Jökulsárlón: a glacier hotel nearby makes the long drive round Iceland much easier to love.

Ask us about luxury small group tours →

Is it worth it?

If you value a smaller group, a comfortable bed after a long day, and a few experiences you’d struggle to arrange alone, usually yes, especially on long-haul trips and safaris, where the camps make a real difference. If you’re happy with simpler hotels and local transport, a standard small-group tour covers much the same ground for a lot less. Our specialists are happy to compare the two for any destination.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a small group tour "luxury"?

Usually a smaller group (often 12 or fewer), upscale hotels with at least one special stay, a private vehicle, more meals and specialist guides.

How big are the groups on luxury tours?

Most of our luxury tours take no more than 12 travellers, and some take as few as 10.

Are luxury tours five-star throughout?

Not always. In remote areas the best available may be a characterful lodge or camp rather than a five-star hotel. Each tour page lists the hotels.

Do luxury tours include flights?

Most are land-only, and we can add flights in any cabin class.

Which luxury tour is best for a safari?

The Luxury Tanzania Safari has tented camps in the Serengeti, and the Luxury Botswana Safari includes an Okavango houseboat.

Is a luxury tour worth the extra?

If you value smaller groups, comfort and special stays, usually yes. If not, a standard small-group tour covers similar ground for less.
