Trip overview

Phuket and Khao Lak sit just over an hour apart on Thailand's Andaman coast, so you get two quite different beach holidays without a single extra flight. Start in Phuket, with its restaurants, island boat trips and lively old town, then drive north over the Sarasin Bridge to Khao Lak. You fly in and out of Phuket, so the journey is simple.

Khao Lak is quieter, with long empty beaches, forested hills and low-rise resorts. It's also the closest base for the Similan Islands, where the snorkelling is some of the best in Thailand. The guide price is for five-star hotels in both places with breakfast, and we can change the split of nights if you'd like longer in one or the other.

Good to know

How far is Khao Lak from Phuket?

About 80 kilometres, or around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by road from Phuket airport. Resorts in the south of Phuket are further away.

Which is better for a quieter holiday, Phuket or Khao Lak?

Khao Lak is quieter, with fewer bars and longer, emptier beaches. Phuket has more restaurants, shopping and boat trips, so the two work well together.

Can I visit the Similan Islands from Khao Lak?

Yes. Speedboat day trips leave from Thap Lamu pier, usually from mid-October to mid-May when the national park is open.
