Trip overview

Thailand is a long way to fly in one go, so a stopover in Doha splits the journey neatly in two. Qatar Airways flies to Doha from London and several other UK airports, and from there it's about seven hours to Phuket. Three nights in Qatar's capital is long enough for the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif and an evening walk along the Corniche.

Then fly on to Phuket for seven nights on the Andaman coast. Kata Noi, in the south-west of the island, is a small, sheltered bay with clear water and a relaxed feel, close enough to Kata and Karon for restaurants, markets and boat trips. You use the same airline the whole way, which keeps connections and baggage simple.

Best time to go: November to March is ideal for both: Doha is warm rather than scorching, and Phuket is in its dry season. Doha is very hot from June to September, when Phuket also has monsoon rain.

Which UK airports can I fly from?

Qatar Airways flies to Doha from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. Your fare and timings may vary by airport.

Do I need a visa for Qatar?

UK passport holders can currently visit Qatar without arranging a visa in advance for a short stay. Check the latest entry rules before you travel.

Is Doha a good stopover for families?

Yes. The museums are child-friendly, the Corniche is good for an evening walk and there are beaches and malls with plenty to do in the heat.

Can I stop in Doha on the way home instead?
