Lombok sits just east of Bali, across the Lombok Strait, but it feels a world away from Bali's busier resorts. This twin-centre starts with five nights in Sanur, on Bali's calm south-east coast, close to Ubud's rice terraces and the island's great temples. Sanur's reef-sheltered beach and seafront path make it an easy, relaxed base, about 30 minutes from the airport.
Then a fast boat takes you across to Lombok, calling at the Gili Islands on the way. You stay on the quiet north-west coast, near the boat harbour for day trips to the Gilis to snorkel with turtles. Inland are waterfalls, Sasak villages and the volcano Mount Rinjani. You return to Bali for a final night before flying home.

Sanur is a relaxed resort on Bali's south-east coast, with a reef-sheltered beach and a long seafront path. It's about 30 minutes from the airport and an hour from Ubud.
Lombok is larger and less developed than Bali, with quiet beaches, waterfalls and the 3,726-metre volcano Mount Rinjani. From the north-west coast it's a short boat ride to the Gili Islands for snorkelling.
Return to Sanur for a final night close to the airport, ready for your flight home.

Best time to go: May to September is the best time, in the dry season, with calmer seas for the boat crossing. Rinjani National Park's trekking routes usually close from January to March. Bali's airport closes for Nyepi, the Day of Silence, in March.

Yes. Lombok has far fewer visitors, so its beaches and villages feel more peaceful. It's ideal if you want space and nature after Bali.
Yes. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air all have small hotels, and there are no cars on the islands. We can add a few nights there.
It can be choppy, especially in the afternoon and between December and March. Morning sailings in the dry season are usually calmer.
