Trip overview

This trip pairs the energy of Bangkok with two of southern Thailand's quieter corners. After three nights in the capital, fly south to Surat Thani and head into Khao Sok National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in the world. At Elephant Hills you sleep in a tented camp under limestone cliffs, meet rescued Asian elephants and spend a day on Cheow Lan Lake.

From the jungle it's about two hours by road to Khao Lak on the Andaman coast. Its long, uncrowded beaches are a calm place to finish after the city and the jungle, with nine nights to rest. From mid-October to mid-May, speedboats run out to the Similan Islands for some of Thailand's best snorkelling, and Phuket airport is about 75 minutes away for the flight home.

It suits couples and families who want more than a beach, without a long touring schedule.

Good to know

Is Elephant Hills ethical?

Elephant Hills doesn't offer riding or bathing with elephants. Guests watch, feed and learn about the elephants at its sanctuary, which looks after animals retired from logging and tourism.

Is Elephant Hills suitable for children?

Yes. Families with children often stay there, and the activities are gentle. The camp has electricity, private bathrooms and hot water.

How far is Khao Lak from Phuket airport?

About 75 minutes by road. Khao Lak doesn't have its own airport, so you fly home from Phuket.

When can you visit the Similan Islands?

The Similan Islands National Park is usually open from mid-October to mid-May. Day trips leave from Khao Lak's Thap Lamu pier by speedboat.
