Cape Town & the Winelands – 5 Days
The Cape Peninsula, penguins, Cape Town's history and a winelands day, in a group of no more than six.
Tour overview
This 5-day short break shows you Cape Town and the Cape Winelands in a small group of no more than six, combining spectacular coastline and wildlife with the city's history and some of the world's most beautiful vineyards. Children aged five and over are welcome, so it suits families as well as couples and friends. You stay four nights in a hotel in Cape Town, with breakfast daily, and an arrival transfer from the airport is included. Tours are by van with a local guide, leaving a full day free to explore at your own pace.
Cape Town is one of Africa's most appealing cities, set between Table Mountain and the ocean. Your first full day follows the Atlantic seaboard past Maiden's Cove to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, where you can walk up to the old lighthouse to see where two oceans meet. In Simon's Town, home of the South African Navy, you visit Boulders Beach to watch African penguins. Back in the city, a two-hour walking tour traces 350 years of history, from the Castle of Good Hope and the Slave Lodge to the District Six Museum and the parliament where apartheid laws were made and later repealed, ending with the colourful houses of Bo-Kaap.

The next day is spent in the Cape Winelands. You begin at the Fairview estate on the slopes of Paarl Mountain, famous for its wines, artisan cheeses and goat tower, then visit the Groot Drakenstein prison, from which Nelson Mandela walked free in 1990. In the valley of Franschhoek you taste wine among manicured vineyards, and after time in the university town of Stellenbosch, a cellar tour at Hidden Valley Estate ends with a chocolate and wine pairing.
Your final full day is free. You might ride the cable car up Table Mountain or hike one of its trails, take the ferry to Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned, explore the V&A Waterfront or stroll in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, before a last dinner with your group.
The physical rating is low. This break suits travellers short on time who want a taste of Cape Town, its coast and its wine.
