Tour overview

This 8-day small-group cycling trip is a lively introduction to central Cuba, with a twist: you ride alongside veteran members of Cuba's masters cycling clubs, who share their love of the sport and their country. Groups have between 4 and 18 travellers aged 16 and over, with a tour leader throughout and local experts. You stay seven nights in casas particulares, family-run guesthouses with private bathrooms and air-conditioning. Seven breakfasts, six lunches and three dinners are included, with packed lunches and drinking water on cycling days, plus arrival and departure transfers.

After a welcome in Havana, you are fitted to your bike and set off on a cycle tour of the capital with a member of the Cuban Masters Road Cycling Club, then travel to Playa Larga on the Bay of Pigs. A coastal ride takes you to Playa Girón, where your leader explains the failed American-backed invasion of 1961, and on to Caleta Buena before Cienfuegos, the elegant Pearl of the South, explored by electric tricycle.

With a rider from the Cienfuegos cycling team you pedal inland to Cumanayagua, then walk and swim at the El Nicho waterfall in the Sierra del Escambray. Another ride leads to Rancho La Vega, a working farm where you have lunch, before you transfer to Trinidad, a UNESCO-listed colonial town of cobbled streets and pastel houses, with a walking tour.

The next day you cycle to Playa Ancón, a classic white-sand Caribbean beach, for a swim and lunch at a beach paladar, with an optional salsa class back in Trinidad and an evening of live music at the Casa de la Trova. You ride into the Sierra del Escambray and visit the Valle de los Ingenios, the valley of the old sugar mills, and Santa Clara on the way back to Havana. The last morning is a tour of Havana by classic car and a walk through the old town.

The physical rating is medium, with short and medium-length rides on paved roads. This trip suits active travellers who want a short, social Cuban cycling adventure with plenty of culture. Single rooms are available for a supplement.
