Tour overview

This 15-day escorted tour is a complete journey through Colombia, from the Andean capital and coffee country to the mountain city of Medellín and the Caribbean coast, with return flights from the UK, internal flights and most meals included. Groups have between 12 and 28 travellers aged 12 and over, with an English-speaking tour director and local guides. You stay thirteen nights in comfortable three- and four-star hotels in Bogotá, Pereira, Medellín, Santa Marta and Cartagena. Thirteen breakfasts, twelve lunches and thirteen dinners are included, giving you a taste of Colombian cuisine from ajiaco soup to fresh Caribbean seafood.

In Bogotá, the beating heart of Colombia, you explore the colonial La Candelaria district and its museums, then visit the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, an underground church carved into a salt mine. Flying into the Central Mountains, you walk in the Cocora Valley, home to the world's tallest palm trees, the wax palms that tower over green hills.

Based in Pereira, in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Coffee Cultural Landscape, you visit a coffee plantation to learn how Colombia's famous beans are grown and roasted. A flight takes you to Medellín, the hillside city of eternal spring, where you discover its remarkable transformation, then travel out to Guatapé to see La Piedra, a giant granite rock rising above a lake of islands.

Flying to Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast, you explore Tayrona National Park, where rainforest meets beaches and coves. Travelling by road to Cartagena, the jewel of the Indies, you take a city tour from the hilltop of La Popa through the walled colonial old town, then visit La Boquilla, an Afro-Colombian fishing village preserving its traditions, before flying home.

The physical rating is low, with gentle walks and some heat on the coast. This tour suits travellers who want to see the best of Colombia in comfort, with flights, meals and guiding included. Return flights from the UK and three internal flights save long road journeys, and departures run in the drier months for the best weather on the coast. A light jacket is useful for the cooler evenings in Bogotá.
