Tour overview

This 3-day trip is a short, sharp introduction to Uluru and Kata Tjuta, the two great rock formations at the heart of Australia's Red Centre and one of the most spiritually significant places on the continent. Groups have up to 16 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout and a private vehicle. You stay two nights in a hotel in Yulara, the resort town beside Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park. Two breakfasts and a lunch are included, and there are options to start or finish in Alice Springs for travellers combining the trip with a wider journey through the Northern Territory.

Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 4pm at your hotel in Yulara, before you head straight out to Uluru, the vast sandstone monolith sacred to the Anangu people. From a prime viewing area you watch the rock glow red and orange as the sun sets over the desert.

The next day you head out to Kata Tjuta, formerly known as the Olgas, a towering collection of 36 domed rock formations that rise from the desert. You walk into Walpa Gorge, where the sheer walls of Mount Olga tower above the track and a small stream supports pockets of plant life. Returning to Uluru, you visit the Uluru–Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre to learn about Anangu culture and the Tjukurpa creation stories, then walk to the Mutitjulu Waterhole, a permanent pool sheltered at the base of the rock and home to rock art.

On your final morning you rise early to watch the sunrise over Uluru, one of the best ways to see the changing colours of the rock, before setting out on a walk along its base to see its caves, waterholes and textures up close. You then return to Yulara, where the trip ends, with onward transfers for those flying out or continuing to Alice Springs.

The physical rating is low, with gentle walks on flat paths and early starts. This trip suits travellers short on time who want to experience Uluru and Kata Tjuta with a knowledgeable leader and a small group. Pack a hat, sunscreen and a fly net.
