Algeria’s Sahara Desert Adventure – 9 Days
Five nights wild camping among the canyons, dunes and rock art of the Algerian Sahara.
Tour overview
This 9-day adventure takes you into the heart of the Algerian Sahara, one of the most spectacular and least-visited deserts on Earth. A tour leader and a local desert crew look after the group. You stay one night in Algiers, one in Djanet and five nights wild camping in remote desert locations, with dome tents, mattresses, a dining area and a toilet tent; day rooms in Djanet let you shower on your return. All meals are included in the desert.
After a guided tour of Algiers, from the Kasbah to Notre-Dame d’Afrique, you fly south to Djanet, an oasis town at the foot of the Tassili n’Ajjer. Travelling by 4WD with no more than three travellers per vehicle, you explore the Timrass and Tikoubaouine region, then the northern edge of the Ténéré desert and the famous ‘crying cows’ engravings.

Driving deeper into the Sahara, you reach the canyons of El Biredj and Djaren, with their towering rock walls, sand dunes and ancient rock art around Tin Koukak. Short walks fill the mornings, and each evening you camp beneath an extraordinary night sky. After a final morning in the desert, you return to Djanet and fly back to Algiers.
The physical rating is medium, with basic wild camping. This trip suits adventurous travellers who dream of the deep Sahara.
