Wonders of Ancient Algeria & the M’Zab Valley – 10 Days
Roman cities, the M’Zab Valley and Constantine in a little-visited corner of North Africa.
Tour overview
This 10-day tour explores the extraordinary heritage of northern Algeria, from Roman cities to Berber fortress towns, in a country few travellers have visited. A tour leader travels with the group throughout, with local guides at major sites. You stay nine nights in hotels, with breakfast daily, three lunches and a dinner, and a domestic flight to Ghardaïa is included.
After a welcome dinner in Algiers, you visit the Roman ruins of Tipaza and Cherchell on the Mediterranean, then fly to Ghardaïa for a full day in the M’Zab Valley, a World Heritage Site of fortified towns built by the Mozabite people a thousand years ago, including Beni Isguen, Melika and El Ateuf.

Heading north, you explore the Al Qal’a of Beni Hammad, the first capital of the Hammadid emirs, and the vast Roman city of Timgad. You visit the royal tomb of Madghacen and spend two nights in Constantine, built on a rock above a deep gorge spanned by dramatic bridges. The Roman ruins of Djemila, set in the mountains, are among the best preserved in North Africa, and your trip ends with a tour of Algiers, including the Kasbah, the Martyrs’ Monument and Notre-Dame d’Afrique.
The physical rating is low. This tour suits curious travellers who want to discover Algeria’s outstanding Roman and Islamic heritage.
