Tour overview

This 8-day small-group trip is a compact introduction to Alaska's wild landscapes, from the tundra and mountains of Denali National Park to the fjords and glaciers of the Kenai Peninsula. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout. You stay seven nights in hotels. Five breakfasts, two picnic lunches and a group dinner of pizza and beer at a Talkeetna brewpub are included, leaving plenty of freedom to try local seafood and craft beers.

Your adventure begins in Anchorage, the largest city in the USA's largest state, set between mountains and the waters of Cook Inlet. You head north along the Parks Highway to Denali National Park, six million acres of wilderness crowned by Denali, at 6,190m the highest mountain in North America.

An early start brings an incredible scenic bus journey deep into the park along its single road, where private vehicles are not allowed, with stops to look for grizzly bears, moose, caribou, wolves and Dall sheep across the tundra and river valleys. From Denali you drive to Talkeetna, a historic frontier town and base for climbers attempting the mountain, to explore its old buildings and riverside and enjoy a group dinner at a local brewpub.

Driving along the Turnagain Arm, an All-American Road famous for its mountain scenery and tidal bore, you reach Seward, gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, for two nights. A free day lets you take a glacier and wildlife cruise into the fjords to see whales, sea otters and puffins, hike to Exit Glacier, or visit the Alaska SeaLife Center. On the way back to Anchorage you visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, which cares for orphaned and injured animals, including bears, moose, musk oxen and wood bison.

The physical rating is medium, with early starts and optional walks. Days are long in the Alaskan summer, with daylight late into the evening, giving you plenty of time to explore on your own. This trip suits nature lovers short on time who want to see Alaska's wildlife and scenery with a small group.
